Transformational experience!
EMBA Programs offer a path to career advancement and other gains
A former Olympian who grew the non-profit he founded from $5 million to $30 million. An entrepreneur who appeared on Shark Tank, and, yes, made a deal. A manager who rose to the C-suite for the largest global leader in the hotel industry.
These three took different paths to career advancement but share common ground: As alumni of Executive MBA (EMBA) Programs, their EMBA experience transformed their perspectives, enhanced their skills, and propelled them to greater success.
They are not alone: Alumni have applied their EMBA gains to help pass legislation that expanded foster care in their state, to turn their capstone into a company, to transition from one industry to another, to move from practitioner to leader.
A worthy investment
It does not take long for students to realize benefits from their time in the program.
“Our data consistently shows great outcomes for alumni, such as salary increases and promotions, as well as high levels of satisfaction,” says Michael Desiderio, EMBAC executive director.
EMBAC’s Student Exit Survey tracks both changes in salary and responsibilities, as well as promotions, and has proven those points throughout the years. The 2025 EMBAC Student Exit Survey revealed that EMBA graduates received a 17.5 percent increase in salary after program completion. The average salary at program start for students in the 2025 survey was $192,644. By the end of the program, the average salary rose to $226,428.
In addition, 40 percent of EMBA students who completed the survey received a promotion during the program, and 55 percent reported increased responsibilities during the program, up from 49 percent in 2021.
Many impacts
EMBA contributes much more to its participants than quantifiable career boosts, including:
- The ability to analyze complex situations and make tough decisions
- Deepened understanding of all business functions
- Increased confidence to lead a team and to tackle additional responsibilities
- Access to the latest in innovations, ideas, and approaches
- Expanded professional networks
It may not be their first thought when they join the program, says Desiderio, but time after time, students and alumni mention the quality of their peers as one of the key program strengths.
“There are not many places where business leaders from different industries in different roles can spend concentrated time together, make professional and personal connections, and learn from each other,” he says. “One hallmark of EMBA Programs is their ability for talented leaders to form professional bonds and in many cases lifelong friendships.”
Pioneers
The University of Chicago launched the first EMBA Program in 1943, which offered managers and executives a flexible format that allowed them to continue working while pursuing an education.
That inaugural class of 52 spent two nights a week for two years sharpening their business acumen and broadening their knowledge. At the time, University of Chicago Professor Walter David “Bud” Fackler called the program an immediate success story. “There was an important market niche to be served, and there was a good product presented by a small but excellent faculty,” said Fackler, who later became director of the program.
The EMBA differs from the traditional MBA in its format, its cohort-based learning, its services for students, its opportunities that include practical and often immediate application of what students learn in the program to their work, and an emphasis on leadership development, among other features.
This new approach to business education for working executives served as a model for the many programs that followed. Currently 240 EMBA Programs in 30 countries are part of EMBAC's ecosystem and prepare business leaders for the fast-changing challenges in today’s business world.
Features that make a difference
Like the students they serve, EMBA Programs have evolved throughout the years, adapting curriculum, incorporating more opportunities for real-world application, and focusing on experiences that broaden and strengthen leadership skills. Students now can choose from greater flexibility in formats, from in-person to fully online to hybrid and variations in between. They also benefit from the following enhancements:
- Executive coaching to help students maximize their potential
- Career services to support their career development and advancement
- Leadership development to strengthen leadership skills
- International experiences that strengthen global business acumen
- Projects that involve leading and participating in teams
- Services that make life easier as a working professional student
“EMBA Programs continue to innovate as needs change,” says Desiderio. “They often lead the way for other programs by generating novel opportunities to learn by doing and from peers as well as top faculty. As a result, students walk away with a transformational experience that opens the door for greater opportunity.”
