Greetings from Texas!

I hope the new school year is off to a great start for everyone. I'm reaching out to learn more about leadership coaching programs you might offer to students. Specifically, I'm interested in understanding how these programs are structured. Are they managed through the career office, or another department? Are they required? And are there specific eligibility criteria for students?
To give you some context, we currently provide leadership coaching to a select group of EMBA students through an application process. We collaborate with a certified IFC coach who generously donates his time. Typically, he works with five students each year, with each student having one-hour monthly sessions over an eight-month period. Currently, I manage the applications and set up the schedule (the coach sends out invites once schedules have been set). 
We have a faculty member who is currently pursuing coaching certification and is interested in starting a new coaching program. However, we're facing resource constraints as our career center, which manages the current EMBA coaching program, is unable to support an additional program. I'd love to learn how other schools manage similar situations and explore potential strategies to integrate this new coaching opportunity without overburdening our staff.

First...

I would not let an individual's needs drive an initiative (even if faculty). If it is not accretive to the university's goals and missions, it will only drain resources.  These are very hard calls to make.  I am sure "more coaching" sounds good, and no one would say it is a bad idea, but is it the mission-critical issue that needs to be addressed right now?  Are there other places where the resources are needed that will provide more value? All universities are living in a very resource-contained environment, and we need to start making very hard decisions on where we are putting our time, talent, and treasure.  The question can no longer be, is this a good thing, but is this the BEST thing? If yes, what will we stop doing that is less important to open the resources?  

Ok, rant and free advice aside...

We provide coaching for each EMBA team and one-on-one coaching as requested.  There is a faculty member in OB who oversees and hires these coaches.  We have a staff member who works behind the scenes to get the coaches set up in our systems for payment and provides them with their teams to coach.

We manage coaching through our PLD programme, whereby students receive mandatory individual leadership and team coaching sessions.  Students receive 7 individual sessions, and 4 team coaching sessions over the 1.5 years of our programme.  We have a coordinator who manages this for us, and who works with a team of external coaches who are hired in to do the sessions with the students.  We do offer separate career coaching but this is managed through our Careers department, however it is not mandatory for students to make use of this option.  That being said, if we did not have the coaching coordinator, we would not be able to offer as much as what we are to our student - the workload to manage this within a cohort of 50+ students is just too much alongside the general running of our programmes so it is good to "outsource" it internally.

Greetings Lori from beautiful fall Ann Arbor.

Here at Ross, we have an embedded leadership development program that runs concurrently with our academic program and is provided to all students and is delivered while they are on campus for once a month residencies. We have stopped labeling them as optional and have seen much greater engagement with our students. We have a LDP Lead who sets the strategy and manages coaches and a coordinator who schedules programming, team coaching (provided each term) and 1:1 coaching for up to 10 sessions. We source our coached through our Executive Education dept. that has coaching as a component of some of their offerings which is great since they are already in the school's system. We have a dedicated Career Coach for each of our cohorts (1st & 2nd year) in Ann Arbor (1) and Los Angeles (1).  We have been able to develop Career Coaching into an additional asset of the program. Greetings Lori.  The Oregon Executive MBA in Portland currently uses 3 contracted executive coaches for our program.  But we are in the process of creating an RFP for executive coaching services.  Our current model:  students choose 1 of 3 coaches.  Have the option of taking a 360 assessment.  And are eligible for 3 1 hour coaching sessions plus a 1.5 hour Assessment Debrief.   

We have 50 students per cohort, and over the past few years students have asked why we don't offer more options for executive coaches - they are often in different stages of their career / different industries etc. and the 3 coaches we currently use are not a great fit for most of our students.    We also have an internal Career Coach who is our Associate Director of Student Services.    Like Donna Humphrey of Michigan Ross - we too have developed Career Coaching into an additional asset of the program.    This discussion board has been very informative.  Thank you for asking.
